Dementia care

SCARBOROUGH – Maine Savvy Caregiver Project will begin Thursday, June 9, at the Fryeburg Public Library and at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. This free 12-hour (six-week) course is for family caregivers of people with dementia.

The course trains family caregivers in how to assess the abilities of a person with dementia and feel more confident in the skills of caregiving. The workshop is designed to help caregivers keep the person with dementia in the community for as long as possible.

Historical group

WATERFORD — The first meeting of the Waterford Historical Society for the 2011 season will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in the Old Town House next to the town beach on Keoka Lake. It will be the annual meeting, with election of trustees and potluck refreshments.

The program for the evening will be on the history of the Little World’s Fair in North Waterford. The society would welcome anyone to come and share memories of this unique fair, which started in 1850.

This year will be an exciting one for the society. In addition to previewing the new research room, at the annual meeting members can purchase advanced tickets for the Aug. 4 meeting, when we will be privileged to hear Tim Sample talk on Maine Humor and Waterford’s own humorist Artemus Ward. Tickets will be $18 at the door of the North Waterford Church. They will be available for $15 after June 9 at Books N Things in Norway and Bridgton Books, as well as at Box 201, Waterford ME 04088. Wheels for the World

AUGUSTA — Wheels for the World will sponsor a collection of wheelchairs and other mobility aids at Augusta Walmart from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11. The wheelchairs, walkers, aluminum canes and crutches collected will be restored and distributed to 22 countries where the disabled cannot get such “luxuries” and are left as castaways or have to drag themselves around by their hands. Wheels for the World is a ministry of Joni and Friends.

Attic treasures

LOCKE MILLS — An attic treasures sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Locke Mills Union Church. Baked goods, a few antiques, clothes, knick knacks and more will be available. To benefit the Ladies Circle.

7 1/2 mile sale

NORWAY — The annual 7 1/2 mile yard sale sponsored by the Heywood Club of Crockett Ridge will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11. Sellers can have a sale at their own home or donate items to the club for their fundraiser. Only good used items, no clothing or appliances. For information, call 743-5150 or 743-8030.
