MEXICO — Construction on the Webb River Bridge resumed Monday, with a crew from A.J. Coleman Co. of Conway, N.H., building a coffer dam.
The dam is below the Route 2 bridge, which connects Dixfield and Mexico.
“We hope to begin working on the temporary bridge at the beginning of next week,” foreman Kirk Kirk said.
“The temporary bridge should take between a week to 10 days to install,” he said.
“When the temporary bridge is completed, it will handle all westbound traffic on Route 2,” Kirk said, “while eastbound traffic will travel over the existing bridge. In the meantime, the existing eastbound lane will be demolished, followed by the tearing down of the westbound lane.”
The project is scheduled for completion in September 2012, he said.
“We anticipate minimal traffic delays at the Webb Street Bridge while construction is under way,” said Phil Pinkham of the Maine Department of Transportation, “since we will have two lanes, one flowing east, one west, during the entire construction.”
“What I advise people to do is slow down when approaching the construction zone, ” Kirk said, “especially when we have the temporary bridge in place.”
There will be an S curve to manage when driving over the temporary bridge heading westbound. Motorists should be going no faster than 25 miles per hour over the temporary bridge, he said.
