NORWAY — A major reconstruction project on Route 26 is about to start.
Town Manager David Holt said he expects the contract to be signed with McGee Construction within the next few days and the work to begin in late June and go through July.
Fair Street, from Grove to Green streets, will be closed from two to three weeks during the reconstruction.
The project is part of an ongoing effort by the town to update sewer lines, some of which are 100 years old.
“The water and sewer lines in that area are old and this work has several benefits, including avoiding future unexpected repairs,” Holt said. The construction is part of an effort to upgrade most of the town’s lines and separate storm water out of the sewer to prolong the life of the treatment plant.
Holt said the project will also improve drainage issues in the Green Street area and on Route 26.
The time for the road closure was chosen to avoid school being in session, but Holt said he still expects traffic “challenges.”
“Make no mistake, this is going to be a great challenge,” he warned. “The town has some experience with this and will work with everyone to make the best of a challenging situation.”
Holt said town officials will be meeting with businesses and emergency personnel soon to ensure as easy as possible access over the roads.
“Our aim is to provide access to business and local traffic,” he said.
