FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue Middle School will be closed again Thursday as crews work to clean up an oil spill.

To ensure student safety as equipment is going in and out of the school area, school officials decided to close the school for the second day, Leanne Condon, director of curriculum, said.

“The cleanup is going well but we have to keep at it,” she said.

During an oil delivery Tuesday, an alarm malfunctioned and the tank was overfilled, causing Number 2 fuel oil to overflow from a pipe into an outside courtyard between the old section and new section of the school on Middle Street.

School was closed on Wednesday for seventh-graders but the eighth grade already had a class trip planned and that did occur.

Thursday was planned as a Step Up day for sixth-graders who will be attending the school in the fall, Condon said. That has been postponed, but parents will still meet with the principal at 6 p.m. Thursday at the school as previously scheduled, she said.
