Lewiston and Auburn amusement audiences got their first glimpse of a child comedienne yesterday at Music Hall. Little Margaret Shelbey, a young miss in the neighborhood of 16 years, showed that a child could deliver comedy scenes and lines that would do credit to one many years her senior. Miss Shelbey is the star in the one-act comedy,”The Littlest Devil,” which commenced a weekend engagement at Music Hall.
50 years ago, 1961
One of New Auburn’s landmarks, the former Deacon Isaac Haskell homestead on South Main Street, between Seventh and Eighth streets, is in the process of being torn down.
The property is owned by Arthur Pontbriand, New Auburn businessman, and the land probably will be utilized later as the site of an apartment house.
25 years ago, 1986
Auburn native Andy Demers — perhaps better known as Andrew Demers of the Maine State Police — on Monday received a major job promotion as field commander of four state police troops.
In a ceremony at MSP headquarters, the force’s head, Col. Allan Weeks, made the promotion official and assigned Demers — who was also promoted to captain Monday — to the field command of Troops A, B, D and G. These troops cover York, Cumberland, Oxford, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Waldo counties as well as portions of Kennebec and Androscoggin.
