NEW GLOUCESTER — Voters will go to the polls Tuesday, June 14, to act on a school budget and elect a school director and selectman.
Polling hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Memorial School on Route 231.
Nathaniel Berry IV is seeking re-election for a second three-year term as selectman. He is vice chairman of the board.
He is being challenged by Mark Stevens.
Berry said the biggest issues before the town are dealing with the economy and providing services during hard economic times without raising taxes.
“I don’t want to cut services to people. And, I want to give people a good quality of life and keep our rural character,” the Morse Road resident said.
Berry serves as a liaison to the town’s Budget Committee and Public Safety Committee.
“I try to keep an open mind serving on the board and am not part of a special interest group and don’t run on a political platform. I want to serve all the people in the town,” he said.
He retired from the Maine Warden Service after 34 years of service. His last three years were as an administrator for the southern district of the state.
He and his wife, Chong Ae, are the parents of two adult daughters who attended local schools.
Stevens is the financial controller for The Liberty Group, a real estate development firm in Portland. He is responsible for the financial oversight of 10 corporate entities, as well as nine managed properties and 30 asset managed properties.
He also provides bookkeeping services for several small businesses in the Greater Portland area.
“As a homeowner in New Gloucester, I want to make sure our tax dollars remain as low as possible, while working for us in the best way possible,” he said. “I want to see new businesses come to town and thrive. I want to see local farmers continue to produce great products and see more of those products in the local grocery and convenience stores.
And, he wants children to have more opportunities through sports, art and other extracurricular activities.
“I plan to bring fresh, new ideas to the Board of Selectmen,” he said.
Stevens has volunteered for the Gray-New Gloucester Youth Basketball Association, the Gray Recreation Department Youth soccer team and for the Eliot Cutler campaign.
He is married to Nichole and has a daughter.
