AUBURN — Assistant Superintendent Katherine Grondin will be nominated to become superintendent Wednesday night when the School Committee meets.

Superintendent Tom Morrill, who is retiring at the end of this month, said Grondin will be the only candidate considered by the committee, which indicates she is favored.

Morrill said Friday that there was a search to find a replacement for him in the spring.

“We engaged Maine School Management. There was a national search. The School Committee went through and reviewed the applications. They interviewed and selected the best candidate. They felt that was Katy Grondin.”

The number of applicants interviewed was limited, Morrill said, adding the number of individuals seeking superintendent jobs is small. “That’s not unique to Auburn. We’re very fortunate to have Katy who has the experience.”

“She knows the system, has a great working knowledge of the initiatives and vision” of Auburn schools, Morrill said. “She has been at the forefront of Auburn schools moving to a standards-based system. She knows clearly, and believes in where the system is headed.”

Grondin has 24 years of experience in education. For the past three she has served as assistant superintendent with Morrill. Before that she was principal at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn. In 2007 she was named as Maine Elementary Principal of the Year.
