A June 1 article concerned candidates for selectman in Oxford. Richard Varney showed unfamiliarity with efforts taken by selectmen in Oxford to develop a feasible plan for water and sewer. He noted that while he was on that board, a study was done (part of an old Comprehensive Plan) to serve the whole town. Except for the north end, I doubt Oxford residents will pay for public water and sewer everywhere else.
Varney said the people in Oxford should “brace themselves.” We have been well “braced” for some time, losing home manufacturing plants (Oxford Homes, 93 employees; Burlington Homes, 70 employees) and, most recently, the woolen mill, among other businesses.
It would be constructive if Varney would share with Oxford voters any support he gave or efforts he would make to rejuvenate the Oxford business base. The community really needs the jobs which would result from such rejuvenation.
