PORTLAND — Hazel S. Sanborn died peacefully at home on June 2, surrounded by her family.

Hazel was born on July 24, 1926, in Oxford. The daughter of George Stoehr and Catherine Lawrence Stoehr, Hazel grew up in Oxford among six sisters and a brother. She graduated first in her class from Oxford High School. In 1947 she completed her nursing studies at the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland.

After a career as a nurse, Hazel met and married the late H. Blaine Sanborn. They were happily married for 58 years, until Blaine’s death in June 2005.

Hazel devoted her life to her family, near and far. She hosted many family gatherings, the most noteworthy being Thanksgiving dinners for all the Stoehr relatives. Begun over 50 years ago, this tradition continues. Her presence will be sorely missed. A talented cook, Hazel was known for her fruit pies, baked stuffed lobster, and cookies. She was also a brilliant bridge player who had the ability to remember the cards played and, therefore, what remained in her opponents’ hands.

Her quiet strength, generosity, and kindness supported her husband, daughters, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews over her lifetime.

Hazel is survived by two daughters, Christine Sanborn Teague and her husband, John, of Concord, N.H., and Elizabeth Sanborn Ventre and her husband, Peter, of Cumberland Foreside; six grandchildren, Reuben Teague and his wife, Johanna, of New Orleans, La., Neal Teague and his wife, Mary, as well as Alex Teague of Brooklyn, N.Y., Daniel Teague of Cambridge, Mass., Katherine and Blaine Ventre of Cumberland Foreside; and two great-grandsons, Leo from New Orleans and Finn from Brooklyn.

She is also survived by her sisters, Dorothy Brooks of Tiverton, R.I., and Annette Daggett of West Dennis, Mass., and 16 nieces and nephews.
