LIVERMORE FALLS — The Downtown Betterment Group will be recognized for its outstanding community service at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 23, at the Androscoggin Grange at 99 Main St. in Greene.

Livermore Falls Town Manager Kristal Flagg told selectmen on June 7, that she had nominated the group for the 2011 Spirit of America Foundation Award for it dedication and service to the community.

The Foundation encourages and promotes volunteerism and chose the Betterment Group to be honored, Flagg said.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray thanked the group for everything it does, including making the downtown more attractive.

Among the group’s credits to spruce up the downtown and make it more friendly to residents, visitors and businesses are: installing “Welcome to Livermore Falls” banners, overseeing an update ornamental light poles, holding cleanup days each year, and sponsoring the annual History Night celebration.

Members were also involved in making sure the Route 4 reconstruction project kept on track in recent years.

The first Spirit of America Foundation Award was presented to Alma Jones by Augusta Mayor William Burney on Nov. 26, 1991, according to a letter Flagg received. Maine Govs. John Baldacci and Angus King, along with WABK radio personalities Don Brown and Ryan Cote are among the many who have played key roles at one of 200-plus Spirit of America celebrations, the letter states.

It appears this is the first time Livermore Falls has received the award, group President Kathleen Szostek said in an email on Monday.

The group is among 14 others in Androscoggin County towns that will receive the award later this month. Others receiving it are Volunteers in Police Service in Auburn, Durham Fire and Rescue, Women’s Club of Greene, Leeds Volunteer Fire Department, Trinity Jubilee Center in Lewiston, Ross Cunningham in Lisbon, Washburn-Norlands Living History Center in Livermore, Revenue Enhancement/Energy Committee in Mechanic Falls, Minot Historical Society, Poland Historical Society, Sabattus Recreation Club, Turner Athletic Association, and the Wales Presbyterian Church.
