SOUTH PARIS — Hugh S. Durgin, 87, died June 5, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

Hugh was born in Bisbeetown, Waterford, Nov. 15, 1923, the son of Henry Porter and Edith Stanley Durgin. He graduated from Norway High School in 1942, and served in the U.S. Army at Fort Rosecrans, Calif.

Hugh was well-known for his uncanny ability to foster large and lush vegetable gardens in any growing season be it wet or dry.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mariann E. (Mills) Durgin; six children; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and Lucky.
