SACO — Kathryn Kyes Mayo, 98, passed away on June 12, at Seal Rock Healthcare facility. She was the widow of Clement A. Mayo, the former manager of Norrwock Shoe in North Jay and general manager of Norrwock Shoe operations headquartered in Norridgewock. He died in 1965.

Kay was born in Jay in 1912, and was a member of the Class of 1929 at Wilton Academy. She worked at the Wilton Woolen Co. in Dryden, until the Norrwock Shoe Factory opened in North Jay, where she was a top stitcher. She was recognized as the fastest top-stitcher in New England for many years.

When Clem became general manager of Norrwock Shoe operations, they sold their farm in North Jay and Kay designed and directed the building of a home at Lake Wesserunsett in East Madison. Kay served as a stitching instructor at Norrwock and Dexter Shoe facilities. In 1972, she retired and moved to Concord, N.H., where she continued to knit mittens and socks for all family members. She also took up oil painting and produced numerous quality paintings of New England landscape and farm scenes. She was an avid reader, cribbage player and crossword puzzle solver.

Kay is survived by daughter-in-law, Joan Mayo of Dexter, the widow of son, Wayne; son, Terry and his wife, Sandra, of Amherst, N.H.; son, Stephen of Lyman; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at the Lake View Cemetery in Wilton.
