LEWISTON — Lewiston Public Library wants kids to read at least 20 minutes per day as part of this year’s Summer Reading Game – One World Many Stories. Children any age, through 12 years old, may play. Pre-readers can play too by having an adult or an older sibling read to them.

Registration begins Friday, June 17, but participants may sign up anytime during the eight weeks of the game. The game officially starts Sunday, June 19. Children will have the opportunity to earn a prize every week of the game, simply by meeting their personal goal. Prizes range from a pencil to a free paperback. As a bonus, children who meet their goal each week will get a raffle ticket for a big prize which will be awarded at the end of the game in mid-August. The child’s goal needs to be at least two hours a week. Children may play for any or all of the eight weeks.

Along with prizes provided by the library, some local sponsors are also providing prizes in the form of certificates for either free food or a free activity. Pizza Hut and Sam’s Italian Foods are offering free personal pizzas. Friendly’s is rewarding readers with a free kids meal and Giffords is giving out free kids cones to those who meet their goals. Sparetime Recreation is giving kids one free game of bowling and the Portland Sea Dogs are providing one child general admission seat.

As part of the Summer Reading Game, the Lewiston Public Library will be hosting three special events. All events are free, but free tickets are suggested to ensure you get in. Those who have tickets will be allowed in first. Tickets are available two weeks before the event date.

The first event is Jim Nutting’s Butterfly & Insect Show, sponsored by the Friends of the Library in collaboration with Cornerstones of Science. This will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20. Nutting will bring dozens of the world’s largest, most beautiful, most bizarre and unusual insects and invertebrates. Jim will present both preserved and live creepy crawlies for up close and personal viewing.

The second event is Jongleur: Comedy, Juggling & Magic. This will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 27. As part of this event, Randy Judkins performs visual and verbal comedy dedicated to awakening the child in all of us. Randy will draw children and adults into his calculated craziness with his vaudevillian’s blend of eccentric characters, down east humor, inexplicable magic and expert juggling.

The final event for this year’s Summer Reading Game is an Earth Jams concert. This will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13. Matt Loosigian – a dynamic, spirited performer – will put on this concert. His performances seamlessly weave humor and silliness with messages of environmental stewardship, peace and compassion.

Along with the Summer Reading Game, the Lewiston Public Library hosts storytime three times a week. The story time schedule is as follows: Family storytime is Monday nights at 6, preschool storytime is Tuesday mornings at 10:30 and babytime is Friday mornings at 10:30.
