LEWISTON — After suffering a heartbreaking loss over the weekend, United regrouped in time to earn a decisive victory over Anthoine Financial Group, 13-5, in Elliot Ave. Little League majors action.
Kaleb Morrisette got the game started with a single but was cut down attempting to steal by catcher Isaac Escobar.
United hitters staked starter Jean-Luc Dostie to a 6-0 lead in the first. Escobar got the party started with a sharp double to right. United loaded the bases when Grant Hartley was intentionally walked before Eddie Turgeon drove in a pair to open the scoring off AFG starter Morrisette. One base on balls later, Elias Atkins cleared the base paths with a double and scored on a passed ball.
Dostie struck out four over his two innings. United stayed on the gas in the second against reliever Hayden Dumont when Gabe Escobar walked and stole second. Dumont got two quick strikeouts before Escobar drove in his brother. After a walk, Dostie drove his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, over the left field fence.
Dumont was relieved by Sean Lake, who struggled early, walking two. Jess Lopez rapped a single to right to drive in a run before Atkins banged his second double of the contest, driving in two more to bump the score to 12-0.
Dostie was relieved by Hartley in the third and surrendered a double to Desmond Jackson before retiring the next three batters. AFG’s Lake worked a scoreless bottom of the third. Anthoine ended the shutout bid in the fourth when Morrisette poked a single up the gut and Hayden Dumont tripled down the line in right. Not to be out-done, twin brother Jordan Dumont drove him in to make the score 12-2.
United scraped out another run in their half of the fourth on back-to back-to-back singles by Dostie, Hartley and Turgeon. AFG bats were quiet in the fifth, but awakened again in the sixth in a bid to close the gap. Morrisette and Owen McCarthy walked before Hayden Dumont singled, scoring one. Jordan Dumont then brought two runs home with a double to make the score 13-5. Escobar then ended the threat with a strikeout and a ground ball to short.
United raises its record to 7-6-1, while AFG falls to 7-5-1 with the completion of a protested game remaining between the two squads. United next faces off against Skelton, Taintor & Abbott on Wednesday, while AFG meets up with Skelton on Friday.
In a previous game fraught with United errors, Melanson Paving prevailed, 5-3.
United starting pitcher Damien St.Pierre got off to a rocky start, walking the first two batters he faced before settling down. Victimized by an error at second that would have ended the Pavers’ threat, United found itself down 2-0 early.
United rallied back for a run in its half of the first on singles by Eddie Turgeon and Jean-Luc Dostie but left two runners stranded.
Sandwiched between thgree St. Pierre strikeouts in the second, Tony Beaupre walked and circled the basepaths on a wild pitch and two passed balls to make the score 3-1. Dalton Wing then struck out the side to protect the Melanson lead.
St. Pierre cruised through the next two innings, surrendering only one hit overall while fanning six through four innings. In the bottom of the third, United climbed back into the game, scoring two to even the score at 3. With both starters out of pitches, Marciano Webster relieved Wing in the fourth and kept United scoreless.
Grant Hartley took the hill for United to start the fifth, plunking the first batter, but escaping the inning unscathed. United then mounted a threat as Isaac Escobar singled to center. He was retired when he was struck by the ball off the bat of Turgeon and called out. Dostie then shot a bullet into left center for a double. Wing took the relay throw and gunned down Turgeon at the plate to end the fifth still tied.
The wheels then fell off for United, as two runs scored on four errors. Webster bunted home one run and Colton Santomango grounded out to drive in the second, making the score 5-3.
Hartley led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and took second on a passed ball. He was called out at third for being out of the base path. St. Pierre then walked, stole second and reached third on a ground out.
Elias Atkins followed with a walk and took second on defensive indifference. Gabe Escobar then grounded to Nick Bisson at second to end the game. Hartley tok the loss, with Webster getting the win. Melanson won its third straight to improve to 5-6.
South Lewiston
LEWISTON — Gendron’s got a jump on Walmart, 9-2, in South Lewiston major league action.
Gendron’s took an early six-run lead, highlighted by Caden Smith’s single and Sam Blaisdell’s double. In the fourth inning, Gendron’s added three runs on hits by Smith, Blaisdell and Jack LeBlond.
Blaisdell pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven. LeBlond closed out the sixth with two strikeouts. For Walmart, Ryan Theriault had two hits, and Ben Harris belted a double. Zion Gurney and Cobey Bullock combined to strike out 12 Gendron batters.
Gendron’s also downed Dube in a 20-10 slugfest. The offense cranked up in the second inning, when Gendron’s scored nine runs and Dube countered with four.
Caden Smith and Austin Merritt had multiple-hit games including multiple doubles by Merritt. Braden Pelletier had a solid line drive hit, and Matt Boulet, Sam Blaisdell and Nick Powers also contributed hits. Jack LeBlond and Seth VanDeursen combined for eight strike outs for Gendron’s.
Dube had multi-hit games from Nate Osgood, including a double; Jeremy Madore, including a home run; and Nick Belanger. Andrew Harriman also contributed a hit. Osgood and Brandon Beaupre combined for seven strikeouts for Dube.
Auburn Suburban
AUBURN — Auburn Fire Fighters blanked Austin Associates, 10-0, in Auburn Suburban Little League major baseball. AFF tallied 13 hits, while Austin Cox, Noah Yarnevich and Tyler Blanchard combined for a no-hitter.
Big hitters for the Firemen were Cox (4-for-4), Yarnevich (2-4), Noah Moreshead (2-4), Christian Beliveau (2-3), Tyler Libby, Caleb Yarnevich and Blanchard. Bobby Shelley hurled for Austin’s with Aaron Perkins closing it out. Shelley also drove a deep fly ball in the third inning, but Kyle Herald reeled it in.
In another major clash, Willis edged Austin, 1-0 in a classic pitchers’ duel. Justin Keaney pitched a complete game but was the victim of a lone unearned run. Caleb Hebert and Cole Butler combined for the shutout victory.
For Austin’s, Billy Duclos had two hard-hit singles, and was robbed of a third by Curtis Ouellette’s solid defense. For Willis, Jonah Crowell led the offense with two hits.
Hammond Lumber scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break an 8-8 tie with Pat’s Pizza in a recent ASLL minor division game.
Michael Braga started the two-out rally in the fifth with a sharp single. Nathan Jones, Sam Leighton, Seth Webster, Tim Emano and Parker Kramerz all chipped in with hits that inning. Tyler Jalbert and Will Cassidy carried the big sticks for Pat’s Pizza, each with multiple hits. Jason Brooker and Matt Trischler both played an outstanding defensive game.
Hammond Lumber saw its two-game winning streak come to an end when Dillingham and Son’s held on to a hard-fought victorySaturday. Luke Josephson, Eli Fournier and Gunnar Winslow each crossed the plate three times in the win.
Dillingham, one of the best defensive teams in the league, benefited from outstanding plays in the field by Ricky Cote, George Ramano and Daniel Cifelli. Hammond Lumber was led at the plate by Jared Schofield. Sam Leighton continued his mastery on the mound and was on the front end of a nice double play in the field by the Lumbermen.
Team ENEFCO turned in a solid overall game in defeating Rowe Ford, 13-6, in minor division action. Rowe was led by solid pitching and hitting from Dylan Sellinger. Also contributing for Rowe were Hunter McQuade and Christian Hiscock with great pitching and timely hitting.
ENEFCO had several key contributers in the win, including pitching from Simon Hayes and R.J. Nichols. Dante Garcia, Cayden Billings and Konnor Simpson all had hot bats, while Matthew Scholer and Jacob Willette showed some amazing glove work. Finnegan Thistle continues to do an amazing job catching and being an overall field general for ENEFCO.
New Auburn
AUBURN — Poisson’s of New Auburn Little League defeated South Lewiston Little League’s Hammond Lumber, 7-3, in major division baseball.
Caelan Pelletier allowed two runs on five walks and no hits over four innings in his pitching debut. The offense had major contributions from several players. Cameron Dubay went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI’s. Zach Boyd went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Spencer Harrington had two RBI’s, and Josh Hamel hit his first triple of the season. Andre Coachman was sensational in center field with two running catches.
Jacob Strout struck out eight batters in four innings of work for Hammond Lumber, with Cole Pringle pitching solid relief for the final two innings. Jacob Labbe had a double and drove in a run for Hammond’s offense.
