WINTHROP — The Auburn White Sox bounced back from a 9-1 defeat Sunday by riding the arm of lefty Sean Cheetham to a 3-1 over the Winthrop Red Sox in the second half of a Pine Tree League senior baseball doubleheader.
Cheetham stymied Red Sox bats with a nasty curve ball and changing speeds effectively to earn a seven-inning, complete-game win. The only Winthrop run came on a sacrifice fly by Matt McCarthy following a Tavis Hasenfus triple. Tim and Jeremy Levesque and Mike Hlister provided the punch for Auburn with RBI hits in the win.
Winthrop scored eight runs early in the opener behind the bats of Ian McCarthy and Sam Shain, who combined for four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the first four innings.
Matt Richardson matched Cheetham’s complete-game victory on the mound for Winthrop, allowing only three hits and one run. Tim Levesque doubled in lead-off hitter Ben Rines, who reached on a single for Auburn.
Hlister and the Levesque brothers were repeat hitters in the twin bill for the White Sox. J.P. Palleschi, Ian McCarthy, Shain and Hasenfus were repeat offenders for Winthrop on the day.
