AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of a bill to transfer administration of Maine’s liquor laws will stand.
The Maine House on Tuesday voted 67-75 to override the governor’s veto. The 67 votes fell far short of the two-thirds needed to override the veto and keep the bill alive.
The bill sought a report examining the feasibility of transferring administration of the state’s liquor laws from the Department of Public Safety to the Department of Administrative and Financial Services. The report would have been presented to the Legislature for further consideration.
In his veto message, LePage said the bill forces the state to spend limited funds for a study that may or may not be acted upon. LePage also says his administration is evaluating the efficiency of that and other state operations.
