AUBURN — Edward Little High School will send six representatives to Boys and Girls State in the third week of June. The annual program is designed for students as they end their junior years of high school. It is a program for instruction in civic participation, local government and state government with the use of small group presentations, guest speakers, simulations and a mock election. The week culminates in the election of a governor and the formation of a model legislature.
Hayley Barton, Ashley DeBlois and Kelly Philbrook will attend Girls State at Husson College in Bangor during the week of June 19.
Barton, the daughter of Churchill and Amanda Barton, has participated in all three years on the swim team where she swam in the 100 meter backstroke, the 100 meter butterfly and both the 200 and 400 free relay events. She also has been a member of the cross-country team and she will be the captain of the team in the fall. This past year she won a national award for drama in Washington, D.C. She is a member of this year’s KVAC champion track team.
DeBlois, the daughter of Mitch and Peggy DeBlois, has been very active in the theater program at ELHS. As a freshman she won a regional all-cast award in the ELHS award-winning play, “How Does A Thing Like That Get Started?” She was also a member of the ensemble cast that won an award that year. She has starred in the musical “Pippin” and in other plays, notably “Tracks” and “The Great Pandemonium.” Ashley also is member of the tennis team, where she has participated for all three years, and the French Club.
Philbrook is the daughter of Mickey and Debbie Philbrook. A three-season sports player, she has participated in soccer, basketball and track. She was a member of this year’s KVAC champion basketball team as well as the semi-final team in the Eastern Maine tourney. She is a captain for the track team, this year’s KVAC champion.
All three women were inducted into the National Honor Society this spring.
Attending Boys State at Thomas College beginning on June 19 will be Connor Dumont, Josh Delong and Jesse Williams.
Dumont, the son of Rene and Julia Dumont, has been a member of the marching and pep bands all three years at ELHS. In addition he has been active in student government serving both as secretary and president of his class. He currently serves the school as representative to the Auburn School Board. This spring he was inducted into the National Honor Society.
Delong, the son of Joe and Pam Delong, has played three seasons of sports in his career at the high school: football, basketball and baseball. As quarterback, he was a member of last year’s Eastern Maine quarterfinal tourney team. In basketball he was a member of this year’s Eastern Maine tourney runner-up team. A member of the National Honor Society, he is co-captain of both the football and baseball teams.
Williams is the son of Jeffery and Sarah Williams. As a member of the ski team he skied in his freshman year for the ELHS KVAC and State Alpine Champion teams. He will be the captain of the team in this coming year. A member of both the tennis team and the Latin Club, he also has served his class on the executive board which helped to plan this year’s prom.
