AUBURN — Savannah Shaw, a sixth-grader at Washburn Elementary School, has been selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., this summer.

The JrNYLC is dedicated to honoring the nation’s most promising middle school students and preparing them for a wealth of opportunities that lie ahead. During the six-day program, more than 250 outstanding middle school students from across the U.S. take part in educational activities, presentations and explore museums and memorials. The trip includes a visit to the White House.

She was nominated by her teacher, Liza Lestage, who recognizes her as one of a select group of students with the scholastic merit, maturity and strength of character to represent Washburn at this unique leadership program.

Savannah is a member of Washburn’s debate team, math team, civil rights team/Unity Project, school chorus, honors district chorus and guitar club. She is writing a book to submit to the Auburn Book Project. She plays ice hockey for Auburn Youth Hockey where she is a two-time winner of the Bill Manson award. This year she was recognized as one of the top female goalies age 12-13 in Maine by being selected to the USA Hockey New England Festival. She plays softball for Auburn Suburban Little League and soccer for LAYSA.

She lives with her parents, Julie Ann and David Shaw, and brother, Donovan. She is the granddaughter of Rodney and Marilyn Shaw of Turner and Robert and Linda Ott of Newton, Mass.
