RUMFORD — A convicted sex offender who police say failed to notify them of his whereabouts as required, spotted himself on a wanted poster on the evening news and turned himself in Wednesday.
William Lee Wickham, 28, was arrested on a felony warrant charging failure to comply with Maine’s Sex Offender Registry, third offense, and taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris, Detective Sgt. James Bernard said Wednesday afternoon.
Bail was set at $500 cash, but Wickham was unable to pay it by midafternoon and remained incarcerated, a jail official said.
He will be arraigned at 8 a.m. Aug. 2 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Wickham was convicted on March 9, 2005, of sexual abuse of a minor and was ordered to register as a convicted sex offender for 10 years.
“He said he saw himself on the 6 o’clock news last night and wanted to turn himself in today and deal with the warrant,” Bernard said.
Wickham told police he was staying with a family member in the Windham and Standish area, Bernard said.
