ANDOVER — Residents voted overwhelmingly Thursday in favor of keeping the Andover Elementary School open for another year.

The ballot question asked if residents were in favor of the SAD 44 board’s decision to close the school at the end of this school year. Fifty six said “yes,” while 229 said “no.”

The school is projected to have 25 students in grades kindergarten to five next fall. Two of the school’s three teachers retired this month. Closing the school would save the district $214,000, officials said.

A group of Andover residents formed Save/Recreate Andover Elementary School to mobilize community support.

The next challenge for the town will be how to raise the estimated $214,600 to operate the school  for the coming year.
