FARMINGTON — Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue, along with three firefighters from the Strong Fire Department, participated in a driver training session Saturday as part of their Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
Driving around cones set up at Mt. Blue Middle School, more than 20 firefighters practiced parallel parking, backing up to a loading dock and driving into an alley and other maneuvers, fire Chief Terry Bell said Monday.
The course, which builds driver confidence, included four hours of class training and the four hours of driver training, he said. The course is taught by Lt. Tim Hardy.
Similar training sessions are being held in fire departments statewide. Although the Farmington department has done the training over the years, now the state is providing guidelines and asking people with Class B licenses who intend to drive to take the training before driving any apparatus, he said. All members are required to take the course.
The course work now involves more over-the-road driving and developing a policy for the local department.
