BRIDGTON – An all-terrain vehicle operator from Massachusetts was seriously injured in an accident late Saturday night, according a release issued by the Maine Warden Service on Monday.
William Sturgis, 45, of Waquoit, Mass., suffered severe head trauma when his ATV rolled over in a ditch along a driveway on Lombardo Drive off Hio Ridge Road.
Alcohol was a factor in the incident, and Sturgis was not wearing a helmet, according to the release.
Maine Warden Sgt. Tim Place and Warden Kris Barboza responded to a call shortly after 11 p.m. A local rescue service was called after Sturgis was found bleeding from the head. He was also believed to have a broken wrist and broken ribs.
Sturgis was taken to Bridgton Hospital, where he was stabilized before being transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
On Monday, Sturgis was listed in serious but stable condition.
Officer Tim Reese of the Bridgton Police Department assisted in the investigation Saturday night.
“The incident is a reminder that ATV operators should remain vigilant about safety and always wear a helmet when riding,” the release stated.
According to the release the accident remains under investigation.
