ATHENS, Greece — An Oxford athlete is one of Maine athletes competing in the Special Olympics World Games, beginning this weekend.
Megan Dyer will swim in the 25-meter backstroke, 50-meter freetyle and 4×50 relay.
Cailynn Goss of Hampden also is entered at the swimming venue. Mathew Poland of Round Pond is competing as a distance runner. Duane Hall is traveling with the delegation as a bowling coach.
The Maine team flew out of Portland on Saturday and will return July 6. Prior to opening ceremonies, the Team USA athletes will stay in their host city, the Isle of Rhodes, before heading to Athens. During this time they will visit with local families and learn about the Greek culture.
Opening Ceremonies will take place Saturday, June 25. More than 7,ooo athletes will be competing in 21 summer sports. The event includes 25,000 volunteers, 2,500 coaches, 3,000 officials, 3,000 members of the media and 40,000 family members.
