Three articles appearing in the Sun Journal on June 15 show why I consider the city of Lewiston a joke.
The editorial, “Soule scandal leaves Lewiston with questions,” begs the question — who is watching the store? The city officials responsible should be criminally prosecuted and fired with the loss of their pensions.
Second, the story “Council focuses on rental units” reports a glut of rental apartments in the downtown area. Why is taxpayer money being used to create new apartments such as The Lofts?
In the late ’70s, Lewiston’s Little Canada was populated by the hard-working poor. Daily, they trudged to the mills, working long hours, yet still found the time to keep their apartments, buildings and neighborhoods clean. Maybe, if the Visible Community had the same pride in its neighborhoods, the need for another code enforcement officer would be unnecessary.
Lastly, a headline that day read “Strike 2 for Lewiston casino.” The article contained an interesting quote from Sen. Margaret Craven. Commenting on the Legislature’s failure to support a casino in Lewiston, Craven stated, “Everybody deserves something except Lewiston.” Exactly.
Although Lewiston’s representatives are nice people, their lack of aggressiveness and continually voting their party’s line makes them no more than than five dependable votes.
Look at the prosperity John Martin of Eagle Lake brought single-handedly to his area. How did one man succeed where five men and women have failed?
