HARRISON – The whoopie pie road race has returned to Harrison.

On July 6, the Recreation Deportment is sponsoring its 9th annual 5K Run By The Lake road race, but this year it’s a return to the former whoopie pie race when runners received a whoopie pie as they race, run, jog or walk across the finish line.

“We have donations. People make whoopie pies to give out to runners,” said race spokeswoman Julie Murphy of how the official state of Maine snack will be provided. “In previous years it was known as the whoopie pie race because we just started handing out whoopie pies out of the blue.”

Despite the popularity of the whoopie pie, they were handed out for only one year, Murphy said.

“Everyone’s wondering where is the whoopie pie race. That’s why we bought back the whoopie pie race,” she said.

The race begins at 7 p.m., rain or shine, on July 6.
