In his story, “Hey Sleepy, think air traffic controllers are the only ones craving a nap? Dream on!” Mark LaFlamme quotes two former employees of Lewiston-Auburn 911 Emergency Communications System who report their own difficulties of staying awake during overnight shifts (Sun Journal, June 19).
One individual, who worked for the center for a short period of time and left several years ago, gives outdated information regarding the center’s workload during the overnight shift, and the other goes so far as to cite policy, though he hasn’t worked here in nearly 10 years.
I welcome LaFlamme’s interest in our 24/7 occupation, but I encourage him to interview someone who is familiar with our current operational tempo, modern 911 technology and existing personnel practices. I fear he has done a tremendous disservice to the dedicated, hardworking 911 staff serving the citizens of Lewiston, Auburn and Poland by suggesting they are not performing their jobs in a sharp, attentive manner when, in fact, they are top professionals in their field.
