PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Portland school officials are going to consider a proposal by police in the Maine city to allow drug-sniffing police dogs to search for drugs in school lockers and parking lots.
The city’s three high schools currently have no provision to allow the searches.
The school board has received the request from the police and the City Council’s Public Safety Committee.
Portland police Lt. Janine Roberts says the goal of the program is to keep schools safe by reducing the presence of illegal drugs. But civil liberties groups say such searches treat all students as potential suspects without cause.
The Portland Press Herald says drug-sniffing dogs have been used in about a dozen high schools in southern Maine.
