RUMFORD — Free, healthy meals will be served this summer to River Valley children.
Kids will be provided breakfast and/or lunch free of charge Tuesdays through Fridays beginning July 5 at Rumford Elementary School through the month of July, said Sandy Witas of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition.
Regional School Unit 10 will provide breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m. and lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the school at 121 Lincoln Ave.
The meal program is open to all River Valley children under the age of 18, regardless of family income status, Witas said, adding that advance registration is not necessary.
“With school vacation upon us,” Witas said, “it is time to think about keeping children eating healthy while school is out.”
“A strong partnership between RSU 10, the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension has been forged to provide a strong presence of Maine-grown food on the menu,” she said.
The River Valley Summer Food Program for Kids is part of a widespread national program involving a partnership of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and local organizations, such as RSU 10 and the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition.
Witas encouraged River Valley farmers who are interested in contributing produce to the program to contact Jeanne LaPointe at 364-8155, extension 4129.
