MEXICO — The Mexico Police Department responded to 36 incidents between June 15 and June 22, according to Chief James Theriault. These are the most notable incidents of the past week:
* On Wednesday, June 15, at 4:30 p.m., officer Eric Bernier responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Family Dollar Store at the Mexico Shopping Plaza. A Family Dollar employee reported that a man had stolen an MP3 player (estimated value of $20), fled the store and jumped into a waiting, running 1999 Mercury Sable automobile that drove off in the direction of Route 2. Bernier notified the Rumford Police Department of the incident, the suspect and the suspect’s car. Sgt. Hodsdon of the Rumford Police Department located the suspect’s vehicle on Spruce Street in Rumford. A suspect matching the description of the Family Dollar shoplifter was spotted and commanded to stop by police. The suspect failed to heed the police officer’s order and fled. Failure to stop for an officer is a felony, Theriault said. Mexico Police were continuing their search for the suspect.
* On Saturday, June 18, at 2:21 a.m., officer Joshua Aylward responded to an automobile rollover accident at the intersection of Roxbury and Poplar roads in Mexico. A 2000 Dodge passenger car was heading north on Roxbury Road when the operator lost control of the car, skidded off the west side of the road and overturned in the adjacent ditch. The sole occupant was taken to Rumford Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
* On Sunday, June 19 at 3 a.m, Aylward responded to a complaint from a female resident of a Worthley Avenue residence that someone was trying to unlawfully gain access to her home through the back door. Aylward investigated and found a visible trail left by the suspect leading in the direction of nearby Mexico Avenue. The investigation of the incident was ongoing as of Thursday.
