LOVELL — Keyboardist Dan Moore, who has played at the Mount Washington Hotel since 1999, will give a solo concert at the Brick Church for the Performing Arts on Thursday, July 7.

Moore will move from harpsichord to piano as he weaves a musical story from the early years of keyboard composition to modern, and often playful, piano works.

He pours his soul into Bach, then graduates through classics and romantics to boogie-woogie. He enjoys evoking the old-time “rent parties” when Fats Waller made the piano jump. “It’s a good way to spin the story, as the evening goes on,” he said. “Moving to pop helps the audience avoid ‘museum fatigue,’ which happens even in concerts.”

Moore said that when he creates programs, he follows the same rules he gives  student soloists: “Surprise the listener – including yourself.”

Although he specialized in the organ at the Boston Conservatory, Moore said he likes the unique qualities of different keyboard instruments and styles. In his youth, he played hymns in Sunday school, but also performed in rock bands, high school musicals and as accompanist to a chorus. He regularly accompanies the Choral Arts Society in Portland.

Moore built his own harpsichord, which offers a glimpse into his mechanical abilities. When he moved to Maine in 1986, he studied aircraft mechanics and earned his A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) license. He now restores older planes, sometimes in his barn.
