AUBURN — Gilberte R. Landry, 84, of 34 Pineland St., Lewiston, died Saturday, June 25, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.

Born in Lewiston on April 4, 1927, a daughter of the late Willie and Tharcille Hebert Cote, she was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at Holy Cross Church.

It’s hard to understand how so much goodness, energy and quiet determination could have been wrapped into such a tiny package as Mom. She had a childlike innocence in her relationships with others. She always gave everybody the benefit of the doubt and saw things from their perspective. She gave her talents and love unselfishly to family, friends and even to strangers. Her greatest joy was service to others, which she did with enthusiasm and dedication for 19 years at Clover Health Care, where she was an activity coordinator. As part of her activity responsibilities she was also a commissioned lay Eucharist minister.

Her proudest achievement was obtaining her high school diploma in 1977 at the age of 46. She completed the full four-year course of study necessary to earn a diploma and graduated along with the young students of the Class of 1977. She then attended the University of Maine, which led to her employment at Clover Health Care.

One of the philosophies which guided her life was, “I’ll adjust,” which she demonstrated with grace and courage in reaction to the challenges which life presented her, especially during her recent, valiant struggle against cancer. She was the bluebird of happiness bringing joy to her husband of 64 years, Gerry, and to her children, Rodney Landry and his wife, Connie, of Lewiston; Claudette Thing and her husband, R. Steven Thing, of Portland; a granddaughter, Heather Lykas and her husband, Jim, of Rhode Island; and a sister, Jeannette Bergeron, of Newport, R.I. One of mom’s most frequent sayings was, “Count your blessings.” She was our blessing.
