LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus announces that volunteer Doug Cooper has been selected as one of 10 volunteers nationwide to be recognized by the U.S. Administration on Aging at its annual Senior Medicare Patrol Conference in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 10. Senior Medicare Patrol, a program of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, works nationally using volunteers to recognize and report Medicare fraud.

Cooper, a retired U.S. Navy officer and customer service professional in the paper industry, started volunteering for SeniorsPlus after his retirement. Cooper became a Medicare volunteer in 2009 and currently sees Medicare clients at the Norway Town Office weekly.

He assists clients one on one with questions and with choosing the right Medicare and prescription plans. As he works with clients, he reminds them to check their Medicare statements for possible fraudulent charges and advises them on what to do if they find fraud.

“Doug is an outstanding example of how much volunteers give to their communities,” said Roland Bussiere, Medicare specialist at SeniorsPlus.

In addition to his weekly office hours at the Norway Town Office, Cooper travels with the SeniorsPlus Mobile Office as a Medicare volunteer. He is also a member of the SeniorsPlus Circuit Breaker volunteer team, assisting clients with their tax and rent rebate applications.

Cooper and his wife, Nancy, will travel to Washington as guests of the Administration on Aging to receive his award at the national conference.
