PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Maine food producer is laying-off 82 workers because investments in new equipment mean the company doesn’t need as many employees.
Portland-based Barber Foods made the announcement on Monday.
Barber Foods President David Barber says that his company must improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance efficiencies.
He says an unfortunate consequence is “letting go” associates.
The Bangor Daily News says the plan to invest in new equipment was in the works prior to the company’s recent acquisition by AdvancePierre Foods.
Barber Foods is a major employer in Portland.
