Fourth of July has commenced for the young American. All the sporting goods stores have commenced to sell fireworks and the youngsters not being able to wait for the day have commenced to fire off some of the goods they have bought. A brilliant exhibition was given on Lincoln Street last evening when some youngsters set off a large number of sky rockets.
50 years ago, 1961
Some Lewiston police officers are going to join the centennial celebration beatnik club, if the Police Commission lets them.
According to headquarters talk, more than one policeman intends to put away his razor should the commission give them the green light.
The beards would be grown in connection with the 100th birthday program of the city to be highlighted with three days of colorful activities in September.
25 years ago, 1986
GREENE — According to the Maine State Police, calls for their services have been steadily increasing in the Leeds-Greene-Wales-Wayne area … and they’re doing something about it by assigning a trooper specifically to those towns. By happy coincidence, that’s a “ticket home” for Trooper Timothy Doyle.
Doyle is set for a July 7 transfer to that area and will be living in Greene, where he resided and went to school from the second grade through graduation from Leavitt Area High School.
