RUMFORD — The second annual “Girls Talk” summer event will be held at Mountain Valley High School July 11-15. The fun-filled week will include a wide variety of activities designed specifically for girls.

While Girls Talk week is to welcome new freshmen it is also designed for any MVHS girls who would like to be involved in leadership, planning next year’s events at the high school and getting involved in the school community. The activities will be fun, appropriate and entertaining for all high school females. The last day will include a white water rafting trip sponsored by New Page.

Girls are encouraged to attend for the full week but may also register for just some of the days.

MVHS offers this free summer week for girls entering ninth grade in the fall because eighth to ninth grade is a critical transition time for all students; the success of the ninth grade year can set a tone for the entire high school time. MVHS provides this week as a way for girls to transition to the high school with the extra support and comfort of being more familiar with the school, its building and its staff.

Research shows that there are many advantages to girls participating in all-girl communities. Girls who participate in events with other girls are more likely to read books, play a sport and go on to college. In addition, research studies show that reading and math skills are often lost during the summer months. This week over the summer will allow girls to maintain an academic connection with their education.
