LEWISTON — Top-seeded Elite Auto defeated United Ambulance in a wild final, 15-14, to claim the Elliot Ave. Little League major division baseball championship.
United advanced to the final by taking out Anthoine Financial Group, 11-1, in the semifinals.
Riding the wave of confidence borne from three straight wins, United set to task immediately in its rout of Anthoine.
Starter Jean-Luc Dostie gave up a single to AFG’s Kaleb Morrisette, but left him stranded at third. In its half of the inning, United plated five runs on five hits by Eddie Turgeon, Dostie, Grant Hartley, Elias Atkins and Jess Lopez.
Anthoine again put the leadoff runner on base when Jordan Dumont singled followed by another by Sean Lake. But again Dostie crushed the rally, striking out the side. Anthoine reliever Morrisette kept United off the board in the bottom of the second.
AFG mounted yet another threat in the third when Dostie scattered three walks but yet again quelled the threat, maintaining his shutout bid. United continued to stroke the ball well in the bottom of the inning, scoring three more runs on hits by Hartley, Damien St.Pierre, Lopez and Shawn-Michael Chabot.
Dumont opened the top of the fourth with a base knock, only to be left hanging at third yet again.
United just about assured itself of a victory in the bottom half, scoring three more times on a hit by Isaac Escobar, a double by Turgeon, and a single by Hartley to make it 11-0 United.
Escobar relieved Dostie in the top of the fifth. After Escobar walked the first two batters he faced, Mitchel Frisbee reached Escobar. AFG scored one run to break the drought, but that was the extent of the damage.
Dostie got the win, striking out 11. Owen McCarthy absorbed the loss for Anthoine.
In the second tilt of a play-off double-header Sunday afternoon, Elite outlasted United to wear the crown.
United, having advanced to the title game 30 minutes earlier, came out with guns blazing, reaching Elite hurler Jared Rubin for five quick runs in the top of the first inning.
Isaac Escobar drew first blood, stroking a double to right-center. Eddie Turgeon drove him home two pitches later. Jean-Luc Dostie then followed suit, plating Turgeon on a sharply hit double. Rubin briefly lost the strike zone walking the next three before Elias Atkins drove home two on a double of his own to make the score 5-0 United.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Gage Cote bunted his way on, stole second, and scored on a wild pitch. Evan Cox then singled and advanced to second on the first of United’s three errors in the inning.
Logan Freve reached base with two outs on a low throw to first by United starter Grant Hartley. Elite continued to play small ball as Owen Cox bunted his way on base, Jalen Allison drew a walk, and Ben Gosselin benefited from United’s third error of the frame when Damien St.Pierre fumbled a toss at first. Ryan Handlon then ripped a single to right, driving in two more to even the score at 5.
United bats went silent in the second and third. Meanwhile, Elite took the lead on hits by Cote, E. Cox and Rubin, coupled with yet another United error, making the score 9-5 after two. The onslaught continued in the bottom of the third thanks in part to three walks and another error leading to two runs, chasing starter Hartley.
Facing a deficit of 11-5, United scratched out a run in the top of the fourth, bidding farewell to Rubin. E. Cox took over and shut the door.
Now down 11-6, United reliever St. Pierre plunked Brock Belanger and walked Rubin before Freve drove them both in on a hard hit double to left-center. Passed balls led to two more Elite runs, making the score 15-6.
But United showed great resolve, reaching Cox for two runs in the top of the fifth on a single by Dostie and doubles by Hartley and Jess Lopez. St. Pierre kept Elite off the board in the bottom of the fifth, keeping the deficit at 15-8.
United its rally caps again in the top of the sixth. With one out already recorded, Parker Brownrig reached on an infield single, Sam Lemay drew a walk, and I. Escobar drove in his first of the game. Eddie Turgeon drove in another as he rolled out to first.
Now with two outs, Dostie walked, chasing Cox. Reliever Jalen Allison was greeted by an RBI single by Hartley followed by another by St. Pierre making the score 15-12.
Gabe Escobar then drove them both home. Elite threw the ball about the diamond before Brock Belanger threw to Owen Cox at third to put out G. Escobar and end the game.
