BREWER — Calvin Kenneth Hobert, 86, passed away June 30, at a Brewer nursing home after a short, but courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Temple, the son of Kenneth and Margaret “Daisy” (Stevens) Hobert.

Calvin attended school in Temple and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1942. After graduation, he worked in the shipyards in Portland for 18 months. In 1943, he was drafted and entered the U.S. Navy, where he served as a fireman and an MP. He received an Honorable Discharge in April 1946.

On May 3, 1947, he married Mavis L. Grant of Farmington. Shortly after that he began his career in the grocery business. He managed stores for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P Stores) in Wilton, Farmington, North Conway and Wolfeboro, N.H., Fryeburg, South Paris, Bethel, Houlton and Bangor. He and Mavis lived 28 years in Brewer and were so happy spending many winters in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He never thought that he would see the Red Sox win a World Series in his lifetime, and he was one excited fan when they won in 2004 and 2007. He also enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his golf buddies at Pine Hill in Orrington and Sandy River in West Farmington.

Calvin is survived by his son, Barry Hobert and Jean, of Brewer; two grandsons, Todd and Toni Hobert of Elkridge, Md.; great-granddaughter, Samantha; stepgreat-grandsons, Chad; Jason and Stacey Hobert of Brewer; great-granddaughters, Morgan, Madison and McKenzie; a sister, Maxine Russakoff of Skowhegan; nieces, Carole Wilbur of Florida, Janet L’Abbe, of Virginia; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; he also considered Dottie’s family, especially Michelle “Mickie” and Boyd Batchelder and their children, Parker and Hunter as his adopted family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Mavis in September 1992; his second wife, Mary Louise (Baker) Gabbert in 2004; a sister Edithe, at three years of age; and in 2009, he lost his best friend and companion, Dottie Crockett.
