RUMFORD — Ruperta Nancy Nichols, 80, of Rumford, died Wednesday, June 29, at the home of her son, James Nichols, on Wyman Hill Road, Rumford, with her loving family by her side.

She was born in Rumford, July 20, 1930, a daughter of Rupert B. Kerr and Gertrude Irene Roberts and she graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Class of 1949.

Ruperta had worked at J. J. Newberry Co. in Rumford as a clerk and later as a substitute custodian for the schools in Rumford and Mexico area.

She was a member of the Rumford First Baptist Church, Neighborly Senior Citizens of Dixfield, Cleopatra Pythian Sisters of Strong, Rebekah Lodge of Canton and the Mexico Historical Society.

She was married in Rumford on Oct. 12, 1952, to Gilbert J. Nichols, who died in Rumford on May 19, 1994.

Survivors include her sons, Stephen Nichols of Hebron and James Nichols and wife, Clemma, of Rumford; twin daughters, Charlotte Pierce and husband, Paul, of Mexico and Charlene Shaw and husband, Arthur, of Mexico; grandchildren, Daniel Pierce and wife, Emily, of Biddeford, Joshua and Brianna Shaw of Mexico, Heather Hodsdon of Rumford and David “D. J.” Newbury of Junction City, Kan.; four great-grandsons, Robert, Thomas, Edmund and Daniel Pierce Jr. of Biddeford; brothers, Lawrence Kerr and wife, Edna, of Mexico, Clyde Kerr and wife, Agnes, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Whitney Kerr and wife, Shirley, of Bridgeport, Conn.; sister, Lois Hood of Botsford, Conn.; son-in-law, Stephen Newbury of Junction City, Kan.; sister-in-law, Gloria Kerr of Mexico; and her loving caregiver, Pamela Turner of Carthage.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband; daughter, Janet Newbury; brother, William Kerr; and sisters, Phyllis Malchisky and Gertrude Kerr.
