Gov. Paul LePage and Republican legislators recently passed a new law repealing same-day voter registration. I thank them for passing the new law.
Asking someone to register to vote on the Thursday before the election doesn’t seem to be unreasonable. Hopefully, the change will make Election Day much less chaotic.
As a senior citizen, I have found voting to be extremely stressful, as hundreds of new voters gather at the polls and register on Election Day.
I try to vote absentee, and I know of other senior citizens who won’t go to the polls based on the long lines and the disorganized atmosphere.
The election clerks do a commendable job, but are simply overwhelmed with the massive number of new voters who simply appear on Election Day.
I also like the idea of people registering early so that the town clerk can have a little time to make sure that the person registering is an actual resident of the town and that they have not already voted somewhere else.
I believe the new law will increase voter participation, as many seniors and disabled people will now feel more comfortable in going to the polls.
