Elizabeth Turcotte, RN-C, ONC, left, of the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine, and Anne Marie Kayashima, RN, ONC, of Central Maine Orthopaedics, presented at the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses’ 31st Annual Congress, held at the Baltimore Convention Center May 14-18. Kayashima and Turcotte gave a presentation telling the story of the partnership that was forged between Central Maine Orthopaedics and Central Maine Medical Center to create the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine, which opened in September 2009. The dedicated facility includes a specialized staff with certification, as well as a rehab center located in the unit. The 16 private suites have been modeled after hotel rooms to deinstitutionalize the patient’s stay, and computers have been placed in every room to better track and monitor patient progress.
