100 years ago, 1911

Five prostrations in the two cities and great suffering, especially in the tenements, resulted from Monday’s record heat wave. It was the hottest day ever recorded in this city, and on top of the great heat was added an excess of humidity that doubled the effects produced. Yesterday was the hottest day since the record has been kept at the gate house of the Union Water Power Co.

50 years ago, 1961

Thirty-two cases of beer were stolen last week from a railroad boxcar at Federal Distributors at 97 Spring St., it was reported yesterday by Lewiston police.

The greatest amount taken was 26 cases of beer, stolen Friday night from the boxcar parked on a siding at the wholesale warehouse.

Polices said six additional cases were taken from the warehouse where thieves made entry through a rear window by cutting through a screen and then lowering the window.

25 years ago, 1986

The Lewiston City Council unanimously approved a liquor license application Thursday from a group of business people who plan to buy Steckino’s restaurant at 106 Middle St.

The application was made by a group — including Boston Bruins forward Rick Middleton — known as Steckino’s Hotel Inc. James Begert, representing the group, told councilors that the new owners would “add a little pizazz” to the well-known establishment.
