AUBURN — A father, son and grandson are all being helped by the American Red Cross this holiday weekend after a blaze tore through their small rented home on Martindale Road.

Battalion Chief Richard McFadden of the Auburn Fire Department said the blaze at 24 Martindale Road, just off Hotel Road, started about 3:37 p.m. Sunday. Residents of the home, Kenneth Dickey, his son, Brandon, and a grandson, all made it out of the structure.

The elder Dickey was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with burns to his hands, according to McFadden. He also said firefighters had to be careful because of ammunition stored in the home.

McFadden said that an investigator with the Auburn Fire Department will be reviewing the remains of the wooden cape home Monday in order to determine an exact cause. He said that early reports indicate that a possible cause could have been from a scented wickless candle.

The fire was brought under control by 13 firefighters within minutes of arriving on scene, but the home was badly damaged. Martindale Road was closed for less than an hour.

McFadden said the home is owned by Maine Source Realty. He estimated damage at about $40,000.
