MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A new report on obesity by the Trust for America’s Health shows Maine remains the most obese state in New England.

But other New England states including New Hampshire and Vermont are catching up.

In its annual ranking of states for obesity, Maine ranks 27th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. New Hampshire was listed as 33rd fattest and Vermont 45th.

Health officials see a troubling trend in the way that obesity has grown nationwide. In Vermont, the portion of the population described as obese is up about 75 percent since 1995. But Vermont ranks 49th in the growth of its obesity rate. New Hampshire ranks 22nd and Maine 28th.
