JAY — A fire destroyed a garage and did minor damage to the exterior of a nearby house Wednesday night at 285 Keep Road, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said Thursday.

About 25 firefighters from Jay, East Dixfield and Wilton responded to the 8:43 p.m. fire call, he said. Farmington and Livermore Falls firefighters were called out but canceled in route.

The garage was engulfed in flames and the wooden exterior of the house was on fire when he arrived on the scene, Booker said. The site is near the intersection of Lake School Road.

Tenant Doug Fletcher was not home at the time the blaze started.

No one was injured, Booker said.

A neighbor reported the fire.

Wilton firefighters put out the garage and Jay firefighters took care of the house.

“We had the fire knocked down pretty fast,” he said.

State fire investigator Edward Hastings IV was called to the scene to try to determine the cause, Booker said.

It is still under investigation, he said.

The garage’s roof and part of the frame of the building remained standing Thursday.

The garage is a total loss, Booker said. There were a couple of lawnmowers in it and they were destroyed, he said.

He estimated damage to the house to be about $5,000. The house is owned by Shirley York of Jay is insured, he said.
