LEWISTON — Michael “Spike” Nelson, 52, a resident of Old Jay Hill Road, Jay, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, July 6, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Farmington, Jan. 29, 1959, the son of Richard “Dick” and Mary Ann “Mimi” (Deshaies) Nelson. He graduated from Jay High School in 1977. Upon graduation, he was hired by IP/Verso Co., where he worked for 33 years as a crane operator in the wood yard.

Mike enjoyed having his family around him, especially his grandchildren whom he devoted much of his time. He also enjoyed having BBQ’s, as well as traveling around Maine collecting the state park stamps and spending time at the beach.

He was an avid sports fan, always supporting community sports. He especially liked having his reserved seat at the MPA Basketball Tournament in Augusta, having attended all 42 games of this year’s tournament.

Mike was a helpful, friendly and easy to get to know type of guy who gave everything but expected nothing in return. His personality attracted his wife, Diane Smith Nelson, his high school sweetheart and best friend for 27 years.
