GREENE — Fire destroyed a sawmill at Veilleux Lumber Co. on Route 202 on Wednesday afternoon, causing an estimated $400,000 worth of damage, according to Greene Fire Chief Alden Peterson.
The fire had been burning for a half-hour before the fire department was notified due to fire-related telephone outages in the area. A passerby alerted the crew at the Lewiston substation on Main Street to the blaze and they, in turn, called the Greene Fire Department.
The fire apparently started in an electrical console in the sawmill, said Peterson.
