BRUNSWICK —A body was recovered from the Androscoggin River nearly four hours after a fisherman fell into the strong current and a woman who tried to save him was rescued.
The name of the man who was pulled from the river at 6:55 p.m. by a Maine State Police dive team was not available late Sunday. Authorities expect to release his name Monday.
Rescue crews from several towns and state agencies searched the river after the 30-year-old man went under while fishing with the woman near a sand bar at Frye Island, according to a prepared release from the Brunswick Police Department.
The woman tried to rescue the man, but was pulled under by the current, the release stated. She was rescued by a kayaker.
The search effort included Brunswick police and fire departments as well as units from Georgetown, Topsham, West Bath and state agencies.
