Auburn City councilors should remind themselves to listen to all their constituents, not just the ones who agree with their views.

A minority of the councilors have exhibited disrespect for each other, the mayor, city staff and entire departments, and have not been called to task for doing so.

One presiding councilor once said, “The mayor has no power.” That may be true, but it is my contention that the mayor’s responsibility is to preside over the meetings and keep the councilors in line, as needed, as well as keeping public comments in line.

I now realize why the city manager is always asking the council to give him some direction. I have attended more than one meeting where it was unclear where the council stood on an issue.

As far as the serious disconnect that has been present between the School Committee, school administration and three of the councilors — I think that has gone on for too long and must come to an end, immediately.

Former Mayor John Jenkins once told me when we discussed that very issue that “we can all agree to disagree, as long as we are not disagreeable.” Three councilors walking out on a presentation given by a department that they oversee, in the city that (the councilors) work for, is inexcusable.

A young woman at the March 21 meeting said it best, “Shame on you.”
