ORONO — A red-shirt freshman football player on the University of Maine football squad died Sunday as a result of a motorcycle accident in Pennsylvania.
Charles Kyeremeh, 20, died in an accident on Route 125, just outside of Donaldson, Pa. At least one other person was hurt in the crash that involved five motorcycles in all, according to the Pottsville Republican-Herald newspaper website.
“Charles was an outstanding young man who had a bright future, both on and off the football field,” Maine football coach Jack Cosgrove said in a school news release Monday. “He was an important part of our team, and we are all devastated by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and friends during this difficult time.”
Kyererneh, a sophomore, was an honor-roll student and star running back at Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pa., before enrolling at Maine last year.
“The death of a student is devastating to our community, and we are all saddened to learn of Charles’ passing,” Maine Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Robert Dana said. “His teammates and friends should take comfort in knowing that we are all here to provide support as needed.”
Full details of the crash had yet to be released on Monday.
