WELD — Notices of proposed assessed property valuations were expected to be sent to property owners on Tuesday, Selectman Nancy Stowell said.

The town has undergone a valuation update with properties being assessed by John E. O’Donnell & Associates of New Gloucester, she said. The update is an effort to equalize valuations to make sure everyone is paying their fair share, she said.

The town saved money over a two-year period to have the valuation done at a cost of $57,000.

During a town meeting in 2010, Stowell said waterfront property was being under assessed.

“Essentially, people who do not have waterfront property are subsidizing those who have lakefront property,” Stowell, chairman of the select board at the time, said then. “This will make it more equitable,” she said.

Assessing agents viewed property externally and took photos to update the town’s assessing records.

Taxpayers not agreeing with their assessment can schedule an appointment with the firm to have an informal meeting between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, July 22, or Saturday, July 23, in the multipurpose room at the town office.

The notices will include O’Donnell’s phone number, Stowell said. Property owners who cannot attend meetings on the two scheduled days can either write or email the company, she said.

In general, assessors say when a valuation is done, one-third of the property values will go up, one-third will go down, and one-third will stay the same.
